Plus Size Jazz Dance
with Rochelle Rice
5-week class beginning Thursday, January 5, 2012, 6:30-7:30PM.
Studio 6, 890 Broadway at 19th Street, 5th floor, New York, NY.
Simonson Technique, created and developed by master teacher Lynn Simonson, is an organic approach to movement that prepares the body to dance in a way that is anatomically intelligent and somatically aware. As a teacher of the Simonson technique, Rochelle recognizes that each student is unique and operates within individual musculoskeletal parameters. Rather than ask students to fit a pre-described ideal, they are guided and taught as to what is anatomically correct for their bodies.
The class will include a warm-up, across the floor movement, and an easy to learn dance combination. Wear light, comfortable clothes and bare feet or socks.
Class dates: Thursday, January 5, 12, 19, 26 & February 9, 2012.
No class February 2, 2012.

Characteristics, Complications and Causes of Binge Eating Disorder
with Amy Pershing, Executive Director and Co-Founder, Pershing Turner Centers
Monday, February 6, 2012, 8:30PM ET
An estimated 3.5% of American women have binge eating disorder. While the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) does not yet have a specific category for binge eating disorder, it does list diagnostic criteria. Join us as we discuss the characteristics, complications, causes and risks of binge eating disorder and emotional eating. Feel free to join this call confidentially without having to state your name when requested by the prompter. Your emotional safety is our primary concern.
Amy Pershing began her career at the Center for Eating Disorders in Ann Arbor in 1991. She developed the Bodywise program in 1993 to serve a growing population of clients with binge eating disorder. Pershing assumed the role of Clinical Director at the Center in 1998. She and Chevese Turner, CEO and Founder, The Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA), joined forces to found Pershing Turner Centers in Annapolis, MD in 2008.
Over 25 years of clinical work, Pershing has developed a unique integrated treatment paradigm for BED, drawing from the seminal Archetype work of Charlene Tosi, Internal Family Systems theory, and the paradigm of intuitive eating and movement. She offers training and supervision to clinicians treating BED nationwide, and has developed two and three day Intensives for those in recovery using this approach.
Pershing lectures extensively on the treatment of eating disorders generally, BED specifically, and her own recovery journey throughout the country, to both professional and lay communities. She has been featured on numerous radio and television programs on BED treatment and recovery, relapse prevention, weight stigma, and intuitive eating and movement. Pershing has also served on a variety of professional boards, currently as the Vice President of BEDA and Clinical Advisor to the Eating Disorders Activist Network. Pershing also developed "Hungerwise," a 10 week program for recovery from chronic dieting and weight cycling. Pershing has served as Adjunct Faculty at the University of Michigan and has written a variety of chapters and articles for both lay and professional audiences. She maintains a clinical practice at both Center locations, treating those in recovery from BED.
